Toyota have reached an amazing landmark, having now sold over 10 million hybrid vehicles worldwide.

The technology was pioneered in the first generation Prius, which launched in 1997 to become the world’s first mass-produced hybrid passenger car. Alongside the Prius, now in its fourth generation and better than ever, are 32 other hybrid Toyota & Lexus vehicles on sale in over 90 markets around the world.

Hybrid Sales in Britain

In the UK, just over a quarter of a million Toyota/Lexus hybrid vehicles have been sold, with the official figure 254,414 at the end of January 2017, with 174,862 of those being Toyota vehicles. Currently there are 7 Toyota Hybrid models on sale including Yaris, Auris, Auris Touring Sports, Prius, Prius+, RAV4 and of course the all-new Toyota C-HR crossover, which has proved extremely popular since its launch on January 1st.

Environmental Focus

The Prius was developed by Toyota in response to growing concern around greenhouse gas emissions and has since become the first car to spring to mind whenever somebody mentions an environmentally friendly package. Takeshi Uchiyamada, who is known as the “Father of the Prius”, said:

“When we launched Prius, no one even knew what a hybrid was.

“Those who drove it were called geeks or other names. Today, thanks to those early adopters who gave Prius a chance, hybrids have grown in popularity, and have ridden a wave of success out of the unknown and into the mainstream.

“We are grateful to each and every one of our customers who has helped us achieve this important milestone of 10 million hybrid sales. We are committed to continue working hand-in-hand with them to tackle global environmental issues.”

Toyota has estimated that the 10 million hybrid vehicles sold worldwide (save the “Coast Hybrid EV and “Quick Delivery 200”) has reduced CO2 emissions entering the atmosphere by approximately 77 million tonnes and saved around 29 million litres of petrol.
