The new 2015 Toyota Avensis has been launched, and it’s available to view, test drive order now from Ron Brooks Toyota Centres in Ilkeston and Mansfield. Here we take you through what’s new and different from the previous Avensis, as well as the specification details. It is of course available as both a Saloon and a Touring Sports (estate) car.
In the main the 2015 Avensis has been designed to make a statement with a more modern look outside thanks to LED headlamps and an even more refined interior, making it comfortable on the road. It’s perfect for business users too, with specific grades designed specifically for professionals that feature extra specification at very little extra cost.
Talking of business users, Toyota understands that for Fleet Managers the most important aspect is total cost of ownership. The engines in the new Avensis have been tuned to meet their requirements with a comprehensive Euro 6 powertrain range that feature 2 new economical and low-maintenance diesel engines.
Safety has been moved up to another level with the Avensis, thanks to standard-fit Toyota Safety Sense technologies that will ensure the Avensis achieves a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating.
Exterior
Toyota’s evolved ‘keen look’ upper grille and wider lower grille ensures a powerful road presence, especially when combined with the LED headlamps that are standard on Business Edition Plus and Excel trim levels. There are 10 exterior body colours, with the feature colours being Havana Brown and Orion Blue. From the side of the car, you’ll notice the dynamic, flowing silhouette that strikes the perfect balance between the front and back of the vehicle that emphasises the fact that the Avensis has a relatively low centre of gravity. New alloy wheel choices have been added with 16” for Active specifications, 2 different types of 17” and 18” that are standard on Excel models. At the rear of the car you’ll find chrome garnish that runs either side of the prominent Toyota badge, LED taillights and “light signature” that matches the headlights at the front of the car.
Interior
The interior of the new Avensis has been upgraded significantly with a totally redesigned cabin. The first thing you’ll notice when stepping inside the 2015 Avensis is just how much room there is – it’s a very spacious car both in Saloon and Touring Sports bodystyles. All of the vehicle controls are exactly where you would expect them to be, and there’s plenty of storage in the centre console, as well as a smartphone tray and conveniently placed cupholders. The seat trims have been improved too, and Alcantara seat inserts (standard on Business Edition grade) or Leather/Alcantara seat inserts (standard on Business Edition Plus grade) further enhance the feeling of quality. It’s just a nice place to be, especially when you feel the Nappa leather steering wheel and gear shift lever. Satin chrome touches on the steering wheel, gear shift lever, door handles and controls as well as soft touch materials on the dashboard, glovebox and door panels complete the premium look and feel.
The Toyota Touch 2 with Go Navigation system (standard on Business Edition grade and upwards) is made up of a large 8” Touch Screen that includes Bluetooth/USB connectivity for your smartphone/media player and displays a feed from the rear-view camera when reverse gear is selected. A 4.2” TFT multi-information display enables the driver to view key vehicle info without glancing too far away from the road for enhanced safety. This feature is standard on all but Active trim levels (Active features a monochrome TFT screen).
Engines
All engines are now compliant with Euro 6 emissions regulations and two new diesel engines have been added to the Avensis’ armoury under the bonnet.
A 1.6 D-4D has been added to the range, with 112hp and 270Nm of torque keeping you moving and 67.3mpg combined economy and CO2 emissions of just 108 g/km keeping costs low for both you and/or your Fleet Manager. This is the choice for Business Users, especially when you take into consideration the extended 12,500 mile/1 year maintenance intervals.
The new 2.0 D-4D has been tuned for dynamic performance, delivering 143hp and a significant 320Nm of torque that is available from a very low RPM. Fuel economy is impressive too at 62.8mpg combined and emissions are stated at 119 g/km keeping annual tax and BIK rates as low as possible. Like the 1.6 D-4D, the 2-litre benefits from 12,500 mile/1 year service intervals.
The 1.8-litre Valvematic petrol engine has been given a fettling too, with CO2 emissions falling to as low as 138 g/km. There are both 6-speed manual and Multidrive S (automatic) transmissions to choose from. This engine has service intervals of 10,000 miles or 1 year. With the Multidrive S transmission fitted, the Avensis provides linear acceleration throughout the rev range and is very easy to drive in city traffic.
Ride and handling
The suspension settings have been revised with improved damper force tuning for better ride comfort, and the Electric Power Steering (EPS) offers excellent steering feel and is neutral yet responsive at higher speeds.
Engine noise has been reduced with user of a new bonnet silencer that has almost doubled in thickness, now 1200 g/m2 as opposed to 700g/m2. There’s also silencers in the instrument panel and glove box. Road noise and wind noise have been reduced too – seals and silencers have been added in the A-Pillar.
